Damon Lindelof has been hired as the film’s director. According to reports Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy who directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel will direct a script that Lindelof famed for his work on Lost, The Leftovers and Watchmen co-wrote.
Lindelof has been speculated to be co-writing a film in the Star Wars franchise this week. He is a huge lover of the property. The industry is reporting that Obaid-Chinoy was employed early on to have input on the production of the picture even though the script is still being developed.
There’s been no information on the film’s plot or release date, but don’t expect it anytime soon. Deadline reports that “this Star Wars project seems to have the most momentum out of all of the films currently in development at the studio.”
io9’s sources had previously said that Taika Waititi’s film, whatever that is, was next in line. This suggests that Lucasfilm is working on many films, but won’t hurry them to the big screen because of the success of the Star Wars property on Disney+.
To be clear Disney has no plans to release a Star Wars film until 2025. It’s a long way off, but with shows like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and Andor on the way in the next two years, it makes sense to wait.
This data allows the production firm to wait for various projects to mature before making a decision about which one will be shown next in theatres. Originally planned as the follow-up to last year’s The Rise of Skywalker, Patty Jenkins‘ Rogue Squadron was scrapped earlier this year.
Even more shocking is the fact that Lindelof has previously only shown interest in Star Wars as a fan and never as a potential creative force. It was almost as though he was reluctant to deal with it. That’s exciting because it means whatever he’s writing a script for right now is something he’s really interested in.
