Rourke won his first boxing as a 112-pound when he was just at the age of 12. He was getting his boxing training at the 5th Street Gym situated in Miami Beach, Florida.
In 1971, he temporarily took a break from boxing as doctors told him to take a rest after he suffered another injury. In the same year, he had a small acting role as a senior at Miami Beach Senior High School in the school play directed by Jay W. Jensen titled The Serpent.
During the late 1970s, he appeared in several TV films. Rourke debuted in film with a small role in war-comedy 1941 directed by Steven Spielberg.
Thereafter, he was seen in the 1980 film Faded to Black in which he portrayed the character of Ritchie. He prominently rose to fame with his portrayal of an arsonist in Body Heat.
