In the teaser for HBO’s Max crime thriller Tokyo Vice, Ken Watanabe assists Ansel Elgort in reporting on the narrative of life — if the intrepid journalist does not meet a grisly end along the way.
Tokyo Vice will premiere on Thursday, April 7, with three episodes (followed by two episodes every Thursday afterward), and is partially based on American writer Jake Adelstein’s non-fiction first-hand account of his time as a police officer in Tokyo.
The series, shot in Tokyo, follows Adelstein’s (Ansel Elgort’s Baby Driver) daily plunge into Tokyo’s neon-soaked underworld in the late ’90s, where nothing and no one is exactly what or who they appear.
Watanabe co-stars as Hiroto Katagiri, an organized crime investigator who acts as a father figure to Adelstein, assisting the reporter in navigating his perilous beat.
Rinko Kikuchi (Invasion), Rachel Keller (Legion), Ella Rumpf (Austria-Freud), Germany’s Hideaki Ito (Boku no yabai tsuma), Show Kasamatsu (Love You as the World Ends), and Tomohisa Yamashita (Japan’s Code Blue) were also featured in the cast.
