Who is Rory Coveney?
Rory Coveney is a former director of strategy at RTÉ, the national public service broadcaster of Ireland. He resigned from his role in July 2023, after facing criticism over the under-declaration of payments to presenter Ryan Tubridy and the loss of money on Toy Show: The Musical.
He is also the brother of Simon Coveney, the deputy leader of Fine Gael and the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

The Departure of Rory Coveney: Know About RTÉ’s Controversial Exit Payment
Rory Coveney, the former director of strategy at RTÉ, departed the broadcaster in July of last year and there is a curiosity in everyone’s mind about how much he received a departure payment. The pay that Mr. Coveney was receiving when he departed the station in July of last year has not been made public by RTÉ in that year.
Coveney was the driving force behind the contentious Toy Show the Musical project. In a statement on Saturday, February 17, 2024, director general of RTÉ Kevin Bakhurst attempted to shed some light on the reasons for the exits of many important executives since he assumed his position.
Mr. Bakhurst provided further information on Mr. Coveney’s departure in a recent statement, implying that his severance pay was equivalent to a full year’s salary.
In fairness, Rory Coveney’s brother @simoncoveney is the Minister for Enterprise, and you have to admit that getting a whopping redundancy payment AFTER you have resigned is very, very enterprising. pic.twitter.com/aymkwaxjJi

His departure came after the senior executive faced criticism for his involvement in the €2.3 million loss-making Toy Show the Musical project at an Oireachtas committee hearing. According to Mr. Bakhurst’s statement, Mr. Coveney and him decided “it was best that he stand down from his role.” He said:
“This enabled the beginning of the restructuring of the leadership team and the suppression of his role.”
He continued:
“Responsibility for strategy has passed to Adrian Lynch, with no additional compensation, in addition to his substantive role as director of audience, channels and marketing. Rory’s role became redundant, an exit payment was offered by RTÉ and accepted by Rory and with no backfill being made RTÉ will recoup that payment by July of this year.”
What is Rory Coveney Doing Now?
Rory Coveney has not publicly commented on his future plans after leaving RTÉ. He is still active on social media, where he posts about his family, his hobbies and his opinions on various topics.
He has also expressed his support for his brother Simon Coveney, who faced a motion of no confidence in September 2023 over his handling of the appointment of Katherine Zappone as a UN special envoy. Rory Coveney defended his brother’s integrity and competence and praised him for surviving the political storm.
