This day remembers when Jesus entered Jerusalem and people greeted him by waving palm branches and laying them on the road. That’s why it’s called Palm Sunday.
It’s the start of Holy Week, which is the last week of Lent before Easter. In Western Christianity, it’s the beginning of the end of Lent, while in Eastern Christianity, Holy Week starts after Lent ends.
What is the Significance of Palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday is a special day for Christians and it’s mentioned in all four books of the Bible called the Gospels. It tells the story of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, which was predicted in the Bible long ago. People were very happy to see him and they waved palm branches to honor him.
In those times, palm branches were a symbol of winning and being successful. For Christians, they mean that Jesus won over sin and death, and he’s the Savior who came to help people. When Jesus chose to ride on a donkey instead of a horse, it showed that he wanted to be a peaceful king, not a warrior king.

Palm Sunday is a special day for Christians. It’s celebrated by blessing and handing out palm branches, which symbolize the ones people laid down on the ground when Jesus entered Jerusalem. Sometimes, these palms are woven into crosses.
In places where it’s hard to get palm branches, like in colder climates, churches use branches from local trees like box, olive, willow or yew. Many different Christian churches, like Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican, Moravian, and Reformed ones, give out palm branches during their Palm Sunday services.

People take these blessed palms home and hang them up with their Christian decorations or keep them in their Bibles. After Palm Sunday, when it’s time for Lent to start again the following year, churches collect the palms. Then, on Shrove Tuesday, they burn them to make ashes for Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent.
