Timothy Stephen Wakefield was an American professional baseball knuckleball pitcher. Wakefield was born on August 2, 1966, in Melbourne, Florida. After graduating from Eau Gallie High School, he played collegiate baseball for the Florida Tech Panthers at the Florida Institute of Technology.
In his sophomore and junior seasons at Florida Tech, he was voted the Panthers’ team’s most valuable player while playing first base. With 22 home runs in a single season, he established a record for the Panthers and set a record for lifetime home runs with 40. The college retired his uniform number, 3, in 2006.
Although Wakefield started his Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he is most known for his 17-year stint with the Boston Red Sox, which spanned from 1995 until his retirement in 2012. Wakefield was the oldest player still playing in the big leagues when he retired at age 45 after 19 seasons. On September 13, 2011, Wakefield achieved his 200th career game victory. With 186 career victories, he sits third in the Red Sox franchise’s history after Cy Young and Roger Clemens.
