Tragedy in the Skies: Jenni Rivera’s Fatal Airplane Accident
Early on December 9, 2012, Rivera lost her life in an airplane accident when the Learjet 25 she was riding in with six other passengers crashed close to Monterrey, Mexico. The night before, she was in town for a performance at Monterrey Arena.
She had a press conference after the program and then on December 9, at about 3:20 a.m. local time, she, four other staff members and two pilots took off from Monterrey Airport to travel to Toluca, Mexico, for an appearance on La Voz… México.
After losing communication with the aircraft about fifteen minutes later, the jet was lost and later in the day, its wreckage was found near Iturbide, Nuevo León. Among the five passengers and two crew members on board, there were no survivors.
The Mexican government’s inquiry which was aided by the National Transportation Safety Board of the United States as is customary when an American aircraft or American person is on board was concluded in December 2014 without a reason for the accident being identified.
At a speed of around 1,000 mph (1,600 km/h), the aircraft nosedived and crashed to the ground, entirely disintegrating. The flight recorder was destroyed in the collision and the cockpit voice recorder was never located. “Loss of control of the aircraft for undetermined reasons” was listed as the likely cause.
