As of yet, Kelvin Kiptum’s autopsy report is not revealed. But the men’s marathon world record holder, Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum has died in a road accident in his home country. He was killed alongside his coach, Rwanda’s Gervais Hakizimana in a car on a road in western Kenya.
On Sunday, January 11, 2024, at about 23:00 local time (20:00 GMT), a traffic collision occurred. Police provided information on the collision, stating that Kiptum lost control of the vehicle and veered off-road entering into a ditch on his left side while operating a motor vehicle.
A police statement said, “He drove in the ditch for about 60 meters before hitting a big tree.” The collision location claimed the lives of Kiptum and Hakizimana. A third individual, a young lady had severe injuries and was admitted to the hospital for further care.
Kelvin Kiptum had been determined to make even more history until a traffic tragedy claimed his life at the age of 24. Kiptum’s next goal was to break the two-hour mark in an official race, given he already had the world record for 26.2 miles.
This would happen during the Rotterdam Marathon in April. His training was intense and his life was simple as he worked toward this objective. Kiptum wrote on social media last month, “Currently my days consist of eat, sleep, train and repeat, My preparation is my main focus at the moment.”
