Who are Norah Jones’s Parents?

Jones was born on March 30, 1979, in Manhattan, New York City. Sue Jones and Indian Bengali musician Ravi Shankar are the parents of Norah Jones. Jones grew up in Grapevine, Texas, living with her mother after her parents’ 1986 divorce.

Jones started singing in church as a young kid and studied voice and piano. Before going to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, she attended Grapevine Middle School and Grapevine High School.

She began performing music at a young age at the Methodist church in her community, where she often performed solos. She played the alto saxophone, participated in band and sang in the school chorus when she was a high school student.

When she was sixteen, she formally changed her name to Norah Jones with the approval of both of her parents. Jones has always had a soft spot for “oldies” like Bill Evans and Billie Holiday. During the summers, she went to the Interlochen Center for the Arts.

She was the 1996 and 1997 Down Beat Student Music Awards’ Best Jazz Vocalist and Best Original Composition winners while still in high school. Jones studied jazz piano at the University of North Texas (UNT) and performed in the UNT Jazz Singers.
