Nigel Lythgoe was born in Wallasey, Cheshire. His dad worked at the docks, and his mom was Gertrude Emily Lythgoe. Nigel got interested in dancing when he was just ten.
He started with tap dancing and later studied at the Hylton-Bromley School of Dance and Drama and the Perry Cowell School of Dance in Wallasey. There, he learned various dance styles like classical ballet, modern jazz, ballroom, character, classical Greek, and dances from different countries.
Nigel’s dancing career kicked off when he joined the English National Ballet for The Merry Widow tour. He trained in London under Joanne Steuer and Molly Molloy. His talent caught the eye of Garth Crooks at the 1981 Spurs Christmas Party.
In 1989, Nigel joined The Young Generation dance troupe on the BBC. He started as a dancer and eventually became their choreographer in 1971. Since then, he’s choreographed more than 500 TV shows.

Nigel Lythgoe Career Success
Early in Lythgoe’s career, he learned how to film dance well using techniques like multi-cameras. This skill opened doors to his TV career. In the 1970s and 1980s, he danced with famous performers like Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly, and he choreographed for artists like Ben Vereen, Shirley Bassey, and even the Muppets.
After working in TV, including at TVS, Lythgoe became the Head of Entertainment and Comedy at London Weekend Television in 1995. There, he oversaw shows like Gladiators and Blind Date.
In 2000, he became a judge on Popstars and gained the nickname “Nasty Nigel.” He later worked on Survivor and joined Simon Fuller’s 19 Entertainment as President of 19 Television, creating the global franchise Pop Idol and its American version, American Idol.
He moved to the U.S. in 2002 to produce American Idol and co-create So You Think You Can Dance on FOX. Lythgoe, along with Ken Warwick, had to skip producing the 2007 Emmys due to scheduling conflicts with So You Think You Can Dance.
In 2007, he founded BritWeek to celebrate UK-California ties. In 2008, he left American Idol to focus on So You Think You Can Dance. In 2009, he and Fuller started Big Red 2 Entertainment, producing Superstars of Dance for NBC.
Lythgoe also judged So You Think You Can Dance (UK). He returned to American Idol as an executive producer in 2010 for season 10.
