How Did Bahsid Mclean K!ll His Mother?
In a Bronx apartment, 23-year-old Bahsid McLean shared living quarters with his 52-year-old mother Tanya Byrd and his 7-year-old younger brother Nasyr. Since he was a young boy, McLean had been in and out of psychiatric facilities due to his history of mental illness and violence.
He was also at odds with his mother, whom he held responsible for his troubles and who he felt was favoring his brother. Bahsid McLean allegedly st@bbed Tanya Byrd and then cut up her body with help from another man. Her remains were stuffed in four plastic garbage bags and scattered along four blocks in a Bronx neighborhood.
Early on a Bronx street, a neighbor’s dog sniffed out one of the bags and found one of Byrd’s remains. The woman’s bl00dy leg was inside the first bag the dog discovered.
Subsequently, the police discovered the last three bags containing the gruesome remains of the victim, which included her head, torso and other limbs. Medical examiners declared Byrd’s death to be a murder after concluding that she had been st@bbed in the neck.
Unraveling the McLean Murder Mystery
McLean was accused of unlawfully dissecting a human corpse, second-degree murder and obstructing the prosecution. He entered a not-guilty plea, arguing that Harris murdered his mother and that he was not guilty. In addition, he claimed to have voices in his brain and to be mentally sick.
However, the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence against McLean including the picture he took with his mother’s skull that was leaked to the media. The jurors and witnesses gasped and started crying when the picture was exhibited in court as well.
In their testimony against McLean, Harris and Maldonado acknowledged having assisted him in getting rid of the corpse but denied having anything to do with the murder. They indicated that McLean was the mastermind and the one who carried out the act and that they obeyed his commands out of fear for him.
McLean’s defense lawyer, Lynn Calvacca, contended that McLean had bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and that he was not guilty because of mental illness or defect.
The jury dismissed McLean’s claim of insanity and convicted him guilty of all counts. He received a sentence of 25 years to life in jail. After entering guilty pleas to charges of obstructing the prosecution, William Harris, a 26-year-old acquaintance of McLean is charged with the same crime of illegal dissection for allegedly assisting McLean in disposing of Byrd’s corpse.
