Cuban started his first company at the age of twelve. To pay for an expensive pair of shoes, he sold rubbish bags. A few years later, he sold coins and stamps to make money. Cuban ran newspapers from Cleveland to Pittsburgh when he was sixteen years old, taking advantage of a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette strike.

He enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Pittsburgh, where he joined the fraternity Pi Lambda Phi, rather than finishing his final year of high school. Cuban attended the University of Pittsburgh for a year before transferring to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
