Tracy Chapman is a legendary singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut album and hit single “Fast Car”. She has won four Grammy Awards and sold over 20 million albums worldwide.

However, she has also been notoriously reclusive and has rarely performed live or released new music in the past decade. Why did she stop performing? In this post, you will know the possible reasons.

Why Did Tracy Chapman Stop Performing?

Tracy Chapman has never revealed the official reason reason of her stopped performing. It is expected that one of the main reasons why Tracy Chapman stopped performing is her discomfort with fame and the spotlight.

She has always been a private person who values her personal life and artistic integrity over celebrity status. In a rare interview, she said:

“Being in the public eye and under the glare of the spotlight was, and it still is, to some extent, uncomfortable for me, but there are some ways by which everything that has happened in my life has prepared me for this career. But I am a bit shy”.

She also revealed that she never sought out the limelight and that she preferred to focus on her music and her passions such as reading, poetry and social justice. She said:

“I love books, I love reading, and I basically grew up in a public library. I’ve always loved poetry, music was always in the house and there was such a range of different music around. My mother sang, my sister could sing, music was so much in the fabric of my life and upbringing. At the same time, I have this personality that is a bit on the reserved side, and which had never really sought out the limelight. That has made me perhaps not the ideal person for this job”.

Another reason why Tracy Chapman stopped performing is her involvement in legal battles that may have taken a toll on her emotionally and financially. In 2018, she sued rapper Nicki Minaj for using a sample of her song “Baby Can I Hold You” without permission in an unreleased track called “Sorry”. The case was settled in 2021, with Minaj agreeing to pay Chapman $450,000.
