Amy Ward Staley was born on October 31, 1985, in Sycamore, Illinois. She played volleyball in college before suffering a foot injury that ended her career. She majored in education and graduated from Northern Illinois University.

She met Brandon Staley in 2007 while working at the student entertainment center, where she was employed for two months before graduating.

Her spouse was employed as a defensive coordinator at John Caroll University, where she received her master’s degree. She spent seven years working as an elementary school teacher in six different districts.

After serving as a graduate assistant coach at Northern Illinois from 2006 to 2008, Brandon joined Division III St. Thomas (Minnesota) in 2009 to work with defensive linemen and special teams. Staley was Hutchinson Community College’s (Kansas) assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2010 and 2011.

He was a graduate assistant at Tennessee during the 2012 season. After that, Staley worked for John Carroll University (Ohio) for three seasons (2013, 2015, 2016) as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach. He worked at James Madison University (Virginia) in 2014 as the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.

Reunited with former head coach Vic Fangio, Staley was hired by the Denver Broncos on January 15, 2019, to teach outside linebackers. Wade Phillips was replaced by Staley, the Los Angeles Rams’ new defensive coordinator, on January 16, 2020.

Instead of Anthony Lynn, Staley was appointed head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers on January 17, 2021. In his first regular-season head coaching game, on September 12, 2021, Staley led the Chargers to a 20–16 win against the Washington Football Team.

Staley guided the Chargers to a 10–7 record and second-place finish in the AFC West for the 2022 season. After finishing as the fifth-seeded team in the AFC, the Chargers faced the fourth-seeded Jacksonville Jaguars (9–8) on January 14, 2023, in the AFC Wild Card round.

On December 15, 2023, Staley was dismissed after a 5-9 start to the 2023 season and a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday Night Football. Both the Raiders’ and the Chargers’ franchise records for the most points scored and allowed in a single game were established during the Chargers-Raiders game.
