In the meantime, according to his LinkedIn page, he completed his education in Pune before enrolling in the university in 2022. Neel’s untimely death has left his friends and family in deep sorrow, experiencing profound devastation upon receiving the news.

What Was Found in Neel Acharya’s Autopsy Report?

In a news release, the Tippecanoe County Coroner stated that there was no indication of foul play in the death of Purdue University student Neel Acharya. According to coroner Carrie Costello, the body showed no evidence of trauma during the Monday, January 29, autopsy. An inquiry has been conducted to determine the manner and cause of death.

How Was Neel Acharya’s Dead Body Found?

According to a family member’s since-deleted post on Twitter, Acharya’s family lost communication with him Sunday (January 28, 2024) morning at around 12:30 am. As a result, his friends and family filed missing person reports with the Purdue University Police Department.

Students were alarmed by this social media post regarding Acharya’s safety. He was last seen in the First Street Tower student residence at Purdue University when he was dropped off by an Uber driver.

The body of Acharya was discovered approximately a mile away near the Purdue University Airport. on January 28, 2024, after he went missing and his mother appealed for help to locate his son. His body was found after police were called to investigate an unmoving body near the airport.

Many people started to wonder why the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office had not announced Acharya’s cause of death after word of his death leaked late on Monday, January 29, 2024 night.

To positively identify Acharya’s body and release a statement with the autopsy results, the coroner’s office had to wait for the family to travel to the United States. The family left India to fly to the US before the coroner’s office was able to inform them of Acharya’s passing.

University Students in Shock Over Acharya’s Death

Interim CS director Chris Clifton emailed the university’s computer science department to let the students know of Acharya’s passing. Clifton wrote:

“It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students, Neel Acharya, has passed away. The leadership in the Department of Computer Science expresses our profound sorrow on his passing. I am deeply saddened by his loss. My condolences go out to his friends, family, and all affected. Our department recognizes this tragedy will impact his fellow students, professors, and staff.” 

He continued:

“When death and tragedy like this occur, people experience different kinds of reactions, including shock, sadness, fear, and anger. Those reactions may rise and fall throughout the day, and even for some time to come, Some of us will want to process our feelings privately and others may want time to talk with peers or counselors. There are several resources at Purdue that can assist you at this time.” 

He described Neel as a motivated individual and gifted academic and expressed astonishment at his passing, calling it a true loss to our community. Acharya’s roommate and friend Aryan Khanolkar described the Indian student as a loving, charismatic soul who will be cherished by all of us.
