A Look at the Nopalera’s Shark Tank Experience
In the summer of 2022, Velasquez sought to participate in the popular TV show Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs pitch their enterprises to a panel of investors. She was chosen to record a segment for Season 14, which premiered in January 2023.
She valued her firm at $6 million and asked the sharks for $300,000 in exchange for 5% of the company. The sharks were impressed by her objective, branding and sales figures, but they were not persuaded by her value. She declined their offers of better bargains and left without accepting any of them.
However, Velasquez was confident in her abilities and her vision, so she did not regret her choice. The exhibition gave her a lot of great comments and exposure which increased her internet presence and sales. Growing up in San Diego, California, Sandra Velasquez was surrounded by nopales, the edible cactus plant pads. She was informed of the health and therapeutic advantages of nopales, which her family ate regularly.
She also found that nopales like aloe vera, provided moisturizing and calming qualities for the skin. This plant is the inspiration behind Nopalera.

She chose to combine nopales with other Mexican botanicals like agave, avocado and lime as the star ingredient in her skincare line. Velasquez has previously worked in food sales for organizations such as Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and Mast Brothers Chocolate.
She also wanted to build a brand that represented her culture and personality because she was passionate about music and the arts. To create the logo and packaging for Nopalera which has bright and geometric designs influenced by Mexican textiles and architecture, she solicited the assistance of a friend who is a designer.
In addition, she honored the plant that began it all by naming it Nopalera, which translates to “cactus patch” in Spanish.
