Osgood worked as a volunteer at Fordham’s FM campus radio station, when he was a student. Between recordings on his shows, he would often play the piano. He also regularly worked with other pupils such as future actors Alan Alda and Jack Haley, Jr., who would go on to become producers and directors.
Osgood was employed as an announcer by Washington, D.C.’s classical music stations, WGMS (AM) and WGMS-FM (now WWRC and WTOP-FM, respectively). He joined the military shortly after, though, to serve as the US Army Band’s announcer.
During his tenure in the U.S. Army Band, Osgood was stationed near Arlington National Cemetery at Fort Myer. He worked as an announcer for radio stations in the Washington region under pseudonyms to complement his money and expertise.
Osgood was well known for hosting The Osgood File, a daily radio commentary program he hosted from 1971 to December 29, 2017 and he was best known both for being the host of CBS News Sunday Morning, a role he held for over 22 years from April 10, 1994, until September 25, 2016
After Osgood’s death, CBS News Sunday Morning shared a tweet on Twitter and wrote, “Our beloved former ‘Sunday Morning” host, colleague and friend, award-winning journalist Charles Osgood, has passed away at age 91.”

In addition, Osgood gained notoriety as the narrator of the 2008 animated movie Horton Hears a Who!, which was adapted from the Dr. Seuss book of the same name. In 2004, he released a book about his childhood.
