How Did Geewadin Elliott Die?

Geewadin Elliott passed away at the age of 45 years. Heidi Elliott was devastated to learn on April 4, 2023, that her closest friend and husband, Geewadin Elliott had passed away suddenly and tragically. It was a call that no one ever wishes to receive.

Her life partner and the father of their four children was killed by a car while attending the Reservation Economic Summit (RES), which was hosted at Caesar’s Palace on The Strip.

Elliott was struck and killed by a car that was going through the junction while he was crossing the street to his hotel at around 2:17 in the morning, reportedly in violation of the don’t walk sign. The driver was taken into custody on accusations of drunk driving. The press release said:

“The driver of the Chevrolet remained at the collision scene and showed signs of impairment. The driver voluntarily submitted to and failed Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. The driver of the Chevrolet was placed under arrest and booked into the Clark County Detention Center.”

The unexpected tragic loss of their beloved Geewadin Elliott has left the Chippewas of Nawash village shocked and extremely devastated.

As word of the catastrophe that claimed the life of a guy who touched many lives and whose kind and gentle nature will always be remembered and missed, tributes started to come in right away and kept getting better. Elliott, a senior manager at Aecon Group Inc., left the following statement on social media:

“It is with profound sadness that Aecon announces the sudden passing of Geewadin Elliott nDizhinikaaz, Senior Manager, U.S. Tribal Relations. Geewadin was a proud Potawatomi Anishinabe member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation at Neyaashiinigmiing, Ontario.”

“As a valued member of Aecon’s Indigenous Relations team, he played an important role in bringing truth, social responsibility, and leadership to Aecon through procurement, training, and employment opportunities between Aecon and Indigenous communities.”

“Geewadin dedicated his life to sharing the truth of the injustices Indigenous people face on Turtle Island and contributed greatly to efforts of reconciliation. All of us at Aecon will miss Geewadin’s leadership, counsel and friendship. We extend our most sincere condolences to his wife Heidi and their four sons Neebeesh, Neebin, Washkesh and Nowqua.”

Elliott spent fifteen years with the Rama Police Service and the OPP before joining Aecon. The Rama Police Service said in a social media post:

“Members of the Rama Police Service would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of former OPP and Rama Police Officer Geewadin Elliott. May he rest in peace and he will be forever in our hearts. Baa Maa Pii.”

Neebeesh Elliott wrote on Facebook, “Words cannot express my love for this man. He was everything a father should be. I pray that you have a safe travel to the spirit world. baamaapi Geewadin-ba Elliott.”

He was the loving husband and best friend of Heidi Elliott, cherished father of Nowquageeshig, Wawashkeshinse, Neebin and Neebeesh, loving son of Germaine Elliott and the late Arthur “Butch” Elliott and son-in-law of Raymond and Judy Fischer, loving brother to Beedahsiga and Veronica, Bawdweodung and Geneva and Winona. He was also survived by his aunties, uncles, cousins, friends, co-workers worldwide and the Bodewadmi Nation.
