Explore Jocko Willink’s Impact on Navy SEAL Training
Willink joined the US Navy at the age of 19 because he had always desired to serve in the armed forces. Willink reported to Naval Amphibious Base Coronado for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S) following his completion of Radioman (RM) “A” School and Navy recruit training.
After completing a six-month probationary term and SEAL tactical training (STT), he was granted the NEC 5326, designating him as a combatant swimmer (SEAL) and granting him the right to don the SEAL insignia.
Willink was an enlisted Navy SEAL with SEAL Teams One and Two for eight years when he was in active service. Willink was part of the SEAL team that captured the Russian Tanker Volga-Neft-147 in the Gulf of Oman, which was carrying Iraqi oil in defiance of a United Nations economic embargo.
Willink obtained his commission from Officer Candidate School and served as a platoon leader. Willink conducted many deployments to Asia, the Middle East and Europe. He deployed in 2006 with SEAL Team Three to the Iraqi city of Ramadi as the commander of Task Unit Bruiser during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Throughout his service, Willink also held the position of Navy SEAL instructor. In October 2010, he retired after twenty years of service. Willink and his SEAL Teammate, Leif Babin, co-founded the leadership consulting business Echelon Front after Willink retired from the Navy.
Willink began his own weekly podcast, “The Jocko Podcast” after making appearances on the podcasts of Sam Harris, Joe Rogan and Tim Ferriss to promote his book. Apart from his writing and consulting work, Willink teaches jiu-jitsu at Victory MMA & Fitness in San Diego.
He also co-owns Origin USA, a Farmington, Maine-based company that makes fitness equipment, nutrition supplements and lifestyle apparel. Origin USA is also one of the few companies in the US that makes jiu-jitsu gis.
While on active duty, Willink began studying Brazilian jiu-jitsu with Fabio Santos, and he maintained his training after leaving the army.
His black belt was awarded to him by Dean Lister. Willink has been a well-known personality in the sport ever since and has mentored other grapplers. Willink promoted his daughter to blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in September 2022.
