How Did Jacob Pothier Die?
Jacob Pothier, a senior at Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech High School, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2024, night in a single-car collision that left his town in shock.
At 10:35 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2024, Dartmouth police and emergency workers rushed to the vicinity of Smith Neck and Gulf roads. Pothier, a resident of New Bedford and Kathleen Martins, a resident of Dartmouth were discovered unconscious in the vicinity of the junction of the Smith Neck and Gulf Road causeways.
Martins’ 2022 Honda Accord was discovered severely damaged. The car had reportedly hit a railing. At the scene, Pothier was pronounced dead and Martins was sent to St. Luke’s Hospital due to potentially fatal injuries. On Sunday, January 7, 2024, authorities received information that Martins had recovered consciousness.
The identity of the driver at the time of the collision was still unknown to investigators. Detectives from the Massachusetts State Police and the Dartmouth Police Department, together with the Crash Reconstruction Unit, are still looking into the incident.

Where Will Jacob Pothier’s Funeral Services be Held?
His visiting hours was held on Thursday, January 11th from 3-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. The funeral mass for him will be held at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish Church, 343 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford, on Friday, January 12 at 10:00 AM. Everyone will get together right at the church. Then there will be a burial in Pine Grove Cemetery.
How Did Community React to Jacob Pothier’s Death?
Superintendent-director Michael Watson of GNBVT expressed his deepest sympathies to the family and mentioned that crisis intervention and mental health specialists will be on hand to assist the kids through this trying period. Michael Watson wrote in a statement:
“The death of a person so young, no matter the circumstances, is a tragedy, It is the stark reminder of a life not realized. It is the loss of a son to his parents, the loss of a brother to his siblings, and the loss of a peer to his friends.”
Justin Cruz, the football coach at GNBVT, stated in a statement that Pothier was a valued part of the team. Cruz said:
“In times like these, it is crucial that we come together as a family and support one another. We must lean on each other for strength and find solace in the memories we shared with Jacob. He was not just a teammate, but a friend and a brother to many of us. His spirit will forever live on in our hearts, and we will carry his legacy with us both on and off the field.”

“Jacob touched so many people in ways we knew; but, in many more ways, we never knew. The laughs and those blue eyes will live in my memory forever.”
She mentions in the fundraising that he turned 18 only two weeks prior. Over $34,000 has been collected as of Monday, January 8, 2024, morning to assist the family with his burial and memorial.
Which Work Did Jacob Pothier Do Before His Death?
Jacob Pothier was extraordinary as a son, brother, grandchild, nephew, cousin, friend and athlete. He was pursuing his carpentry profession at Greater New Bedford Voc Tech and was in the middle of his junior year.
He played travel football for No Off Season and was a member of the Varsity Football team. Born in Wareham, Massachusetts on December 22, 2005, Jacob grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
