MatPat Career: How Did He Make His Money?
To chase his dream of becoming an actor, Patrick moved to New York after finishing school. Unfortunately, he struggled to find success in theater and spent two years without a job.
Patrick initially started making YouTube videos by auditioning for stage plays. Still, in 2011, he decided to turn his channel into a “portfolio” to showcase his writing, research, and video editing skills to potential employers.
Inspired by an Extra Credits episode on learning through various topics, Patrick uploaded the first episode of “Game Theory” on April 18, 2011, discussing quantum mechanics in the 1995 video game Chrono Trigger.
Slowly, his channel gained subscribers, and his videos were featured on popular sites like ScrewAttack and GameTrailers. In 2012, Patrick introduced new segments hosted by fellow YouTubers Gaijin Goombah and Ronnie Edwards, along with Austin Hourigan’s “The SCIENCE!”.
In 2014, he launched the spin-off channel “Film Theory,” focusing on movies and television, which quickly reached over one million subscribers in a month. Apart from gaming-related content, Patrick occasionally shared videos expressing his thoughts on the gaming industry, gamers, and other noteworthy topics.
Patrick began a series called GTLive on August 26, 2015, where he plays games and reacts to videos with his wife, Stephanie. Starting on October 3, 2016, their Monday streams were part of YouTube Gaming Primetime, scheduled from 3 pm to 5 pm PST.
These streams included a voting system for quick polls. As of March 2022, GTLive had 2.94 million subscribers and over 649 million views. The GTLive channel still uploads mostly unedited, pre-recorded content.
On June 8, 2016, Patrick introduced a new show, MatPat’s Game Lab, on YouTube Premium. The show focused on putting video game players in real-life situations similar to those in video games, like bomb defusing, parkour, survival, and military training.
Despite Patrick’s interest in a second season, YouTube didn’t announce any further development. He also appeared in the YouTube Premium series Scare PewDiePie (2016) by PewDiePie and the third season of Escape the Night (2018) by Joey Graceffa.
Patrick had cameo roles in Markiplier’s YouTube Original films A Heist with Markiplier (2019) and In Space with Markiplier (2022). On May 29, 2016, Patrick and eleven other YouTubers met with Pope Francis for an hour.
Patrick asked the Pope to encourage people to “fight for what’s right” and gave him a copy of Undertale (2015), mentioning that its theme of mercy aligns with the Pope’s declaration of 2016 as the “year of mercy for the Catholic church.”
In 2019, The Game Theorists organized a 9-hour charity livestream, raising $1.3 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Guests like Markiplier, TheOdd1sOut, Rosanna Pansino, Scott Cawthon, and others joined. Two more charity streams for St. Jude took place in 2020 and 2021.
The Food Theorists, the third Theory channel and fourth overall, started releasing videos in July 2020. It blends food science with psychology, physiology, and conspiracy, gaining 4 million subscribers and over 499 million views by October 2022.
On December 20, 2022, the fourth Theory channel, and fifth overall, was announced along with the purchase of Theorist Media by startup Lunar X. On February 18, 2023, The Style Theorists was launched, focusing on the science, math, history, psychology, and mystery of fashion, reaching a million subscribers three days later.
Patrick made cameo appearances in several YouTube Rewind videos. On August 27, 2023, MatPat hosted the Streamy Awards, which garnered 15 million views in its first 48 hours, surpassing the 2021 record becoming the most-watched show in its 13-year history.
MatPat Announces Retirement From YouTube
On January 9, 2024, MatPat shared in a video called “Goodbye Internet” that he planned to step down from hosting on March 9 of the same year. Afterward, various members of the theorist team would take turns being the host for each channel.
MatPat would still be involved in a creative capacity, making occasional appearances on the channels, including GTLive, until the summer of 2024.
