Melba Moore was born in New York City to Gertrude Melba Smith who was a singer professionally known as Bonnie Davis and Teddy Hill, a big band leader.
Moore was born and raised in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. At the age of nine, the family moved to Newark, New Jersey, where her mother remarried jazz pianist Clement Leroy Moorman.
Moore finished his high school education at Newark Arts High School in 1958. She received a BA in music from Montclair State College in 1970.

When Did Melba Moore Start His Music Career?
After Moore joined Buddah Records in 1975, the critically acclaimed R&B album “Peach Melba” was released which featured the modest hit “I Am His Lady”. Her greatest success came when the Van McCoy-penned song “This Is It” became her first major hit and peaked at number 10 in the UK Singles Chart, top-20 on the R&B chart and Billboard Hot 100.
Moore tried to replicate the popularity of “This Is It” with small R&B/dance hits for the remainder of the 1970s. Her hit song “Pick Me Up, I’ll Dance,” which was produced by McFadden & Whitehead and released on Epic Records in May 1979, did, however, experience significant success in the UK disco scene, peaking at position 48 on the UK chart.
That same year, she also produced a hit song, a cover of the Bee Gees’ “You Stepped into My Life” which peaked at number 20 on the R&B charts and 47 on the Billboard Hot 100. Moore signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in 1982.
His dance-pop/funk single “Love’s Comin’ at Ya” which peaked at number 22 in the UK and at number 17 on the R&B charts also became a significant hit in several European countries due to its post-disco sound. “Mind Up Tonight” was the next single to reach number 22 in the UK’s top 40.
Following were a number of R&B hits such as “Love Me Right” and “Keepin’ My Lover Satisfied” from 1983, “Livin’ For Your Love” from 1984, “Read My Lips” from 1985 making her only the third black artist to receive a nomination in the rock category after Michael Jackson and Donna Summer.
She had two number one R&B hits in 1986, “Falling” and the duet “A Little Bit More” with Freddie Jackson. She also achieved success with the R&B hits “It’s Been So Long” and “Love the One I’m With (A Lot of Love).”
In the same year, Moore starred in the lead role of the sitcom Melba on CBS; the program was quickly canceled after five episodes broadcast that summer, although its premiere took place the same night as the Challenger explosion.
As the decade came to an end, her popularity started to decline, but she still scored two more Top 10 R&B hits: “Do You Really (Want My Love)” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Moore starred in the horror movie Def by Temptation, which came out in 1990.
