She was one of the oldest actresses in the world and one of the last significant stars from both the Golden Age of Hollywood and the comparable classical era of British cinema before she passed away in 2024 at the age of 101.

She started her career as a stage dancer at an early age and was pigeonholed into the role from then on. At the age of fifteen, she starred in her first film, South Riding. She was awarded the 1942 National Board of Review Award for Best Actress in British Cinema for this performance and she went on to play lead roles in Miranda and Third Time Lucky.

After the collaborative British-American film No Highway in the Sky, Johns began to play more and more roles both domestically and abroad across the Atlantic. She debuted in television and on Broadway in New York City in 1952.
