The full name of David Magill is David R. “Mogie” Magill Jr. He passed away on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023. David’s legacy of kindness will live on in the hearts of people who loved him, even while he stirs up trouble in the heavens above.
At the VFW Post 92, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road, New Kensington, PA 15068, on Saturday, January 6, 2024, David’s celebration of life, scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m., is open to friends and family.
In addition to being the beloved son of Sara “McGoldrick” Thomas and the late David Magill Sr., Mogie was also a loving father to Patrick, Connor and Kelsie Magill. Laureen Taylor, his sister also survives him. David’s son “Patrick Magill” said:
“My dad tried to help everybody he possibly could. He loved the community and the business in the way he loved us.”

Mogie, who was born in 1959, proudly graduated with honors from Burrell High School in 1977. His love of cooking took him to Providence, Rhode Island’s Johnson and Wales University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree.
Mogie’s career as a chef took off and he spent many years as the chief chef at Grieco’s Carefree Inn. His long-held ambition of starting his own business, Magill’s Grill Mogie’s Irish Pub was realized in 1997. Mogie has had an enormous influence on Lower Burrell and the neighboring environs.
He was well-known for his altruism and steadfast resolve. Those who had the honor of knowing him said that he treated strangers like friends and made meaningful contributions to the community. As the owner of Magill’s Grill, Mogie created a sanctuary for the neighborhood, a place of comfort and friendship.
The community’s ongoing support of the charities nearest to his heart “The Brian Shaw Foundation” and “Back the Blue” will ensure his legacy of kindness and giving endures. Mogie’s unwavering spirit bears witness to his conviction that he is still an essential member of the community, reassuring friends and family that nothing can take him away from them.
He lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. He was a strong proponent of living truly and exhorted others to accept who they were. Let’s gather to celebrate Mogie’s life and recall the happiness he offered to all of us in remembrance of him.
