What are the Controversies of Shinedown?
Shinedown is a rock band from the United States that has faced some controversy over the years. The firing of bassist Brad Todd in 2008 was due to personal and professional conflicts with singer Brent Smith. Both of them were struggling with substance abuse issues at the time.
The removal of Smith’s vocals from Apocalyptica’s song “Not Strong Enough” in 2011, was due to record label politics. Smith had recorded the song with the Finnish cello metal band, but his label did not allow him to appear on the US version of the single.
The backlash over the lyrics of their 2023 song “Planet Zero” which some fans interpreted as anti-vaccine, anti-mask and anti-cancel culture. The band denied having any political agenda and said the song was about humanism and social critique.
In February 2023, Because of Philip Anselmo’s questionable past behavior, Pantera was dropped from a few German events and replaced by Foo Fighters. Brent Smith of Shinedown discussed the issue and said that people should be free to develop and learn from their mistakes.
Smith addressed the topic and brought up the comment that he was recently labeled a “casual racist” for being a Pantera fan.
The Shinedown singer recalled the Dimebash incident in 2016 where Anselmo flashed a Nazi salute and then spoke about the German festivals that the band was pulled from. Smith said:
“The reality is that Phil… when what happened, happened, he addressed it to the best of his ability. Most people — I believe — when he addressed it, believed that he was being sincere, Believe me man, I’ll be honest with you. I was somebody that when I saw the video, the way that it was presented, it’s not good. It’s not.”
The vocalist continued:
“The fact of the matter is, the way that I see these types of things is, how are you gonna grow? If there’s a constant level of just, giving no one an opportunity to say that they made a mistake, that they genuinely made a mistake.”
Smith mentioned that Anselmo later addressed the matter and that he would never endorse anything associated with white supremacists, but he also mentioned that many people “called BS” on his apology. He said:
“There’s gonna be certain people — because you also don’t know how they were raised, how they were brought up and how they’re gonna feel about — and that’s why it’s called society.”
The rock star emphasized that even while society moves on from some previous events individuals should remember what happened so that similar mistakes and incidents don’t happen again.

Shinedown is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed by singer Brent Smith in 2001 after the dissolution of his previous band, Dreve.
Retaining the contract with Atlantic Records, Smith enlisted the original members of the band: Brad Stewart on bass, Barry Kerch on drums and Jasin Todd on guitar.
