A Look at Steve Harwell’s Musical Evolution
Steve Harwell formed Smash Mouth in 1994 and he was the lead vocalist and lead singer for the rock band. In the beginning, Harwell was a rapper for the group F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech). After listening to Dr. Dre’s 1992 album “The Chronic” and recognizing that the genre was evolving, he gave up on the Public Enemy-inspired effort.
In 1994, Greg Camp, Harwell, Kevin Coleman and Paul De Lisle created Smash Mouth. Their song “Walkin’ on the Sun” from 1997 was their first hit. The band’s 1999 single “All-Star” was featured in the 2001 movie Shrek, which helped it to return to prominence and hit the top 10 in the US.
In 2006, Harwell appeared in many episodes of the sixth season of the VH1 reality series “The Surreal Life”. In addition to making an appearance in the 2001 movie Rat Race, he has made appearances on other radio and television shows.
He appeared in two musical numbers for the 2013 South Korean-Chinese animated film Pororo, The Racing Adventure: “Beside Myself” and “Everything Just Crazy”.
He seemed inebriated, threatening audience members and doing what appeared to be a Nazi salute at the band’s October 2021 performance at a beer and wine festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York. Then, he declared his retirement and below you will read about his retirement.
Why Did Steve Harwell Retire From Smash Mouth?
Steve Harwell announced his retirement from Smash Mouth on Oct. 12, 2021, because of persistent health problems. As one of the two surviving founding members of Smash Mouth, he has decided to withdraw from the band after 27 years of service.
He is leaving the band to prioritize his medical and mental well-being. This happened right after the artist had a wild performance in which he appeared to make a nazi salute, slipped on beer cans and yelled insulting remarks at the audience.
He even forgets to sing the lyrics to the band’s biggest hit, “All Star.” He was also alleged to have threatened to “never leave the house” if he could get his way and to “swear to God that I’ll f—–g kill your whole family.”
Then Steve has decided to leave his position as Smash Mouth’s lead singer. His representative informed that:
“Steve has been dealing with long-term medical issues over the last eight years and during his last performance at the Big Sip stage, he suffered numerous symptoms directly linked with his current medical situation. As of today, Steve will be retiring from Smash Mouth to focus on his physical and mental health.”
