Her 1981 breakout smash “Seven Year Ache” was the most commercially successful of her string of genre-bending singles that peaked at number one on the U.S. country singles chart and reached the Top 30 on the U.S. pop chart during the 1980s.
In 1990, Cash released Interiors, a spare, introspective album that signaled a break from her pop country. The next year, she filed for divorce, relocated from Nashville to New York City and resumed her writing, recording and performing career.
Since then, she has authored three novels, edited a collection of short tales and recorded six recordings. The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Oxford American, New York Magazine and other magazines and compilations have all featured her fiction and essays.
In addition to receiving 12 nominations for Grammy Awards, Cash’s song “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me” won him a Grammy Award in 1985. She holds two gold records, eleven No. 1 country hit singles and twenty-one Top 40 country hits.

From Which Family Does Rosanne Cash Belong?
Rosanne Cash is the eldest daughter of country music icon Johnny Cash and Vivian. Cash was born in 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee when Johnny was recording his first tracks at Sun Records. Vivian Cash, the mother of Cash was half Sicilian, half African American and half Irish.
Her Italian grandparents were from Cefalù, Palermo. One of Rosanne’s maternal great-great-great-grandmothers, Sarah A. Shields was a mixed-race lady born into slavery who was freed along with her eight siblings by their white father.
Cash and her sisters were reared by their mother Vivian when the family relocated to California in 1958, first to Los Angeles and subsequently to Ventura. She worked with her father’s traveling show for 2.5 years after graduating from St. Bonaventure High School, first as a wardrobe assistant and later as a background vocalist and occasionally a soloist.
Rosanne made her studio music debut on The Junkie and the Juicehead Minus Me, Johnny Cash’s 1974 album, providing the lead vocals on a rendition of “Broken Freedom Song” by Kris Kristofferson. The song “Love Has Lost Again” by Rosanne Cash was recorded by Johnny Cash in 1976 and included on his album One Piece At A Time.
This was Rosanne Cash’s first commercially recorded song as a songwriter, even though she didn’t sing on it. She did a brief stint in London the same year as an intern at CBS Records before coming back to Nashville to attend Vanderbilt University to study drama and English.
