Mendenhall was a football player for the University of Illinois. In 2005, he played in his rookie season and ran for 218 yards on 48 runs in addition to 82 receptions yards and two touchdowns. Mendenhall gained 640 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in 2006, almost double his total.

When Did Rashard Mendenhall Start His Professional Career?
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Mendenhall with the 23rd overall choice in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. ESPN ranked Mendenhall as the 30th-best rushing back in the NFL before his rookie season.
Mendenhall and the Steelers reached an agreement on July 25, 2008, for a five-year contract for US$12.55 million, of which $7.125 million is guaranteed. In addition to returning kicks, he was supposed to support Pro Bowl running back Willie Parker.
Mendenhall was the youngest player on the Steelers going into the 2008 regular season. He added return responsibilities to his running back role. Willie Parker’s injury at the beginning of the 2008 season allowed Mendenhall to start in his first NFL game.
After being struck by Baltimore Ravens defender Ray Lewis in the third quarter, Mendenhall was forced to leave the game due to a fractured shoulder. Mendenhall had gained 30 yards on 9 attempts. Mendenhall spent the rest of the season on injured reserve.

Mendenhall left the final play of the first quarter of the 2012 regular season against the Cleveland Browns due to a knee injury.
After being inactive due to uneven play, Mendenhall was suspended by the Steelers organization for a game against the Dallas Cowboys on December 12, 2012, for missing a game against the San Diego Chargers.
