Ward attended Valley View High School in Moreno Valley, California and was a letterman in football. He recorded 1,100 rushing yards, 973 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns in football as a senior. He was also voted the Sun Belt League Offensive MVP, an All-Riverside County selection and an All-CIF selection.
During his tenure in college, he caught seven passes for 96 yards (13.7 yards on average) and ran 460 times for 3,152 yards (6.9 yards on average) and 39 touchdowns.
In 20 games at Fresno State, he amassed 1,091 yards and 11 touchdowns on 197 runs (5.5 yards per carry on average) and three receptions for 49 yards (16.3 yards per pass on average). Despite playing with a fractured right hand, Ward was declared academically ineligible to play at Fresno State in 1998.
The following year, he was named to the Freshman All-America team. A knee ailment kept him from playing more than seven games for the Bulldogs in 2000.
