Which Work Did Brooks Robinson Do in His Life?
Robinson joined Brooks and Eddie Robinson as a co-owner of the Gorsuch House restaurant, which is next to Memorial Stadium. In 1963, he founded Brooks Robinson Sporting Goods which conducted a lot of wholesale business with teams in the Baltimore region.
They had several locations in the Baltimore region by the 1970s. They supplied uniforms for the Orioles, then later outfitted the short-lived Baltimore Claws of the American Basketball Association. The business borrowed money in 1974 to grow and open a new location in York, Pennsylvania, but due to construction delays, the business was unable to pay off its debt and had to shut down soon after.
To pay off the company’s debt, a judge ordered Robinson’s property to be sold in the fall of 1976. However, Robinson was able to keep the house by using his resources to pay approximately $180,000 (or $971,260 in 2023).
In 1968, he started serving as a spokesperson for Crown Central Petroleum, a company he worked for for more than 30 years. Robinson and Ron Shapiro established Personal Management Associates, a company that handled players’ finances, after the collapse of the sporting goods industry.
After he finished his playing career, Brooks started working as a color analyst for the Orioles on television. In 1982, Robinson participated in the founding of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, a group that assists retired players in obtaining benefits, encourages baseball, generates funds for charitable causes and facilitates communication amongst retired players.
He is still the organization’s president, having taken over from Jim Kaat in the late 1980s. In 2005, Robinson invested in Opening Day Partners, a company that owns many baseball minor league franchises. The organization is the owner of four clubs in the Atlantic League Professional Baseball and Robinson was a major force behind the founding of the York Revolution.
The team was established in 2007 and was the first in York, Pennsylvania, since 1969. Robinson had previously played minor league baseball for the York White Roses in 1955. The plaza at the entrance of WellSpan Park, the team’s stadium is named in honor of Brooks Robinson.
The stadium is situated at 5 Brooks Robinson Way. Robinson assisted in raising funds to renovate Lamar Porter Field, where he had played baseball as a child in his hometown of Little Rock, both in the 1980s and again in 2006.
Many mementos from Robinson’s career, like as his 1966 World Series ring and 1970 Gold Glove, were put up for auction in 2015. The Constance & Brooks Robinson Charitable Foundation received $1.44 million from the auction.
