Kayoko and Toru Ohtani are the parents of Shohei Ohtani. His father played amateur baseball in the Japanese Industrial League and worked at a nearby car manufacturing facility. His mother competed at the national level in badminton during her high school years.
Out of the three children, he is the youngest. He has an older brother named Ryuta who plays amateur baseball in the Japanese Industrial League and an older sister named Yuka. Ohtani was referred to as a “yakyū shōnen” in Japan, a child who was obsessed with baseball.
He was coached by his father and showed early talent for the game. In his second year of elementary school, Ohtani took up the sport. In a six-inning regional championship game, as a seventh-grader, he recorded all but one of the 18 outs.
