Who was Tou Ger Xiong?

Tou Ger Xiong was a comedian and activist from Minnesota. He was a Hmong American storyteller who shared his personal stories across the country to build cultural competency and address racial discrimination. Xiong was named a Bush Fellow in 2019 for his social justice work.

According to Xiong’s website, he was born in Laos in 1973. When he was a little child, he and his family moved to the United States and arrived in St. Paul, where he graduated from Humboldt High School as valedictorian. He later graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota with a degree.

Tou Ger Xiong

Xiong started Project Respectism, a project that incorporated rap music, comedy and storytelling into educational presentations, while he was a student at Carleton. He did stand-up comedy events as well. Xiong characterized his methodology as celebrating cultural diversity through laughter.

Xiong assisted in planning the inaugural Hmong Minnesota Day at the Minnesota State Fair in 2015. He was awarded a Bush Fellowship in 2019 so that he could pursue a master’s degree in public affairs and work on civic engagement and antiracism initiatives.

Xiong was a well-known comedian, public speaker, artist and activist in his adult life and he was often seen performing around town. He traveled far from Minnesota as a result of his work on behalf of the Hmong people. But suddenly he was killed and below you will read about it.

Who Killed Tou Ger Xiong?

Tou’s brother called the loss indescribable. Xiong had arrived in Colombia on November 29 to spend the holidays. When Xiong was out on a date, he was kidnapped by a group of men. They contacted his family, asking for a $2,000 ransom or 8 million Colombian pesos.

But on Monday, December 11, 2023, his body was discovered outside of an apartment with more than a dozen stab wounds. Tou Ger Xiong’s family said that he was kidnapped and killed in Colombia this week after going on a date with a woman he’d met online. You can read Tou’s family statement related to his death provided below:

Why Was Tou Ger Xiong Killed?

It is not yet officially confirmed why was Tou Ger Xiong killed. Whenever we get any official confirmation we will share it with you. After Tou’s death, people shared their concern for his family and shared tributes towards him.

Babs Santos tweeted, “Many in Minnesota’s Hmong community are overwhelmed with grief tonight, as they reflect on fond memories of Tou Ger Xiong.”

Melvin Carter tweeted, “Tou Ger Xiong has been a good friend of our entire Carter clan since the 90s, before either of us was ever considered a public leader.”
