Taylor Sheridan Early Life and Education
Sheridan was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Despite some reports stating he grew up on a ranch in Cranfills Gap, Texas, he was actually raised in Fort Worth, Texas, as the son of a cardiologist.
The inspiration for his cowboy persona came from his mother, originally from Waco, who cherished visits to her grandparents’ ranch. When Sheridan was eight, his mother bought a ranch in Cranfills Gap to expose her children to the tranquility of nature.
Sheridan learned cowboy skills during frequent visits in the late 1980s. While attending and graduating from R. L. Paschal High School, where he was a unique combination of a weekend wrangler and a theater enthusiast, Sheridan dropped out of Texas State University.
He then moved to Austin, taking up jobs like lawn mowing and house painting. A chance encounter with a talent scout in a shopping mall led to an opportunity to pursue an acting career in Chicago. Subsequently, he lived in New York City and Los Angeles during his time as an actor.
How Did Taylor Sheridan Became Famous?
Sheridan initially pursued acting, featuring in smaller films and recurring roles on TV shows like Veronica Mars and Sons of Anarchy. He shifted to screenwriting at the age of 40, debuting with Sicario, a praised film directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Following Sicario, Sheridan wrote Comancheria, which faced delays before being released as Hell or High Water in 2016. The film, starring Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, and Ben Foster, garnered widespread acclaim, earning Sheridan nominations for BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay.
Taylor Sheridan, known for films like Sicario and Hell or High Water, made his second directorial outing with Wind River, starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. The movie, part of Sheridan’s trilogy on the modern-day American frontier, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017.
It follows an FBI agent and a veteran game tracker investigating a murder on a Native American reservation. Despite initial distribution challenges, Wind River was eventually released in the United States on August 18, 2017.
Sony Pictures and Escape Artists also tapped Sheridan to write the American remake of the 2015 French film Disorder. The project, set to be directed by James Mangold, was in the works as of September 15, 2016.
