Galloway grew up in Los Angeles, California. His father immigrated to the US from Scotland and was employed as a sales executive. His mother was a secretary who immigrated from London, England, as a Jewish woman.

Galloway studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business where he received an MBA in 1992.

A Look at Scott Galloway’s Journey From Analyst to Author

Galloway began working at Morgan Stanley as a Fixed Income Analyst in 1987, the year he graduated from UCLA. He established Prophet, a brand and marketing consulting company, in 1992 and RedEnvelope, an online store that specializes in one-of-a-kind and personalized presents, in 1997.

Galloway created the digital intelligence company L2 Inc. in 2005 which Gartner acquired for $155 million in March 2017 and the now-defunct activist hedge fund Firebrand Partners, which was founded in 2005 and invested more than $1 billion in American media and consumer industries.

Galloway established Section 4, an online learning firm in 2019. In 2021, he raised $30 million for a total of $37 million in fundraising during the Series A round. In 1999, he was selected for the World Economic Forum’s “Global Leaders of Tomorrow” class.

He has held directorships at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, Gateway Computer, Eddie Bauer, The New York Times Company and Urban Outfitters. The Big Four tech companies—Apple, Amazon, Meta and Alphabet which he describes as “The Four” or “the Four Horsemen” are the subject of much of his studies.

The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google, his debut book was released in 2017. Galloway started The Prof G Show, a weekly podcast in which he responds to inquiries from listeners on technology, money and business in February 2020.

Galloway released a harsh critique of WeWork’s IPO filing in August 2019. The analysis criticized the company’s lack of profitability, as well as its corporate structure, nepotism and founder Adam Neumann’s evidence of self-dealing.

It also attacked JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, the investment banks that financed the launch claiming that they stand to register $122 million in fees flinging feces at retail investors. Any equity analyst that recommends this stock for more than $10 billion is either deceitful or ignorant or both.

CNN revealed that Galloway will host on their CNN+ streaming service on September 28, 2021; however, the platform was taken offline not long after it launched.
