Born in New York City, Kornheiser grew up in the neighboring town of Lynbrook. He is the only child of Ira Kornheiser (1910–2000) and Estelle (1915–1978). His father worked as a clothing cutter. As a child, Kornheiser went to Camp Keeyumah in Pennsylvania for the summers.
Larry Brown, a future NCAA and NBA basketball coach, was one of his advisers. While enrolled at George W. Hewlett High School, Kornheiser served as the newspaper’s sports editor. He graduated in 1965. Following high school, Kornheiser attended Harpur College, which is now known as Binghamton University.
There, he majored in English literature and started working as a journalist for the Colonial News which is now known as Pipe Dream. In 1970, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. Kornheiser has talked up his time at college on numerous occasions. After graduating from college, he briefly worked with children who had difficulties.
