The son of two teachers, Hayward was born in Dean Street, Swindon, Wiltshire. He received his education at the Commonweal School in Swindon and Shrivenham Primary School in the nearby Oxfordshire town of Shrivenham. Being tall for his age, he was given the nickname “legs” at Commonweal School.
He began performing in bands at the age of 15 and at that same age he purchased a Vox AC30 amplifier and a Gibson 335 guitar, which is featured on almost all of his songs to this day. Every earlier guitar was “unsatisfactory” and needed to be altered.
He played largely Buddy Holly songs in his club and dance hall performances alongside local Swindon acts. All Things Bright, one of Hayward’s early bands opened for The Hollies and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes.
Hayward later regretted signing an eight-year publishing contract as a songwriter with skiffle performer and record producer Lonnie Donegan when he was eighteen years old. He auditioned to be Marty Wilde’s guitarist in 1965 after responding to an ad in Melody Maker. He later collaborated with Wilde and his spouse in The Wilde Three.

Hayward penned 20 of the Moody Blues’ 27 post-1967 hits. Some of the tracks he composed for the band are “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Question,” “The Voice,” “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere” and “English Sunset.”
He has a solo career as well. Blue Jays, his first album released outside of the Moody Blues and a joint effort with John Lodge peaked at number five in the UK in 1975. His 1978 recording of “Forever Autumn” from Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds reached the UK top five.
In 1975, his single “Blue Guitar” recorded with 10cc as the backing band, entered the UK top ten. In recognition of his contributions to the music industry, Hayward was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2022 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 as a member of the Moody Blues.
