Born and reared in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, Rodriguez first attended New York City Lab School for Collaborative Studies before moving to The Leelanau School in Michigan, where he played basketball for his last two years of school.
He played basketball at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia for an additional two years before moving to New York University to complete his degree in sports marketing. In 2005, Rodríguez started his career playing the part of Ángel Rodríguez in the direct-to-video movie Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power.
He also had a recurring role on two episodes of Rescue Me as Kevin Vasquez. Later, he had appearances on TV shows like The Wire, Day Break and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In addition, he starred in the following motion pictures: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Bella, Pride and Glory, Surfer, Dude and The Taking of Pelham 123.
Rodríguez was cast as John Bosley in the 2011 television reboot of Charlie’s Angels; the show was canceled after four episodes had aired. In 2013, he landed the lead role in the crime drama series Gang Related on Fox, playing Ryan Lopez, the adopted son of a crime lord who infiltrates the LAPD to keep his family ahead of the law.
The show started in 2014 but was canceled after one season. After that, Rodríguez co-starred alongside Aaron Paul in the action movie Need for Speed. In 2016, Rodríguez co-starred opposite Vera Farmiga and Virginia Madsen in the adventure drama film Burn Your Maps directed by Jordan Roberts.
In 2017, he co-starred with Kate Mara as US Marine Megan Leavey’s character, Matt Morales in the drama biography Megan Leavey. He also portrayed Bakuto in the Netflix shows The Defenders and Iron Fist that same year.
