What is the Story of the American Symphony?
American Symphony, a documentary on Netflix chronicles Jon Batiste during a period of professional success while his wife Suleika Jaouad’s leukemia returns.
At a tense time in their marriage, Jon Batiste supported his wife Suleika Jaouad. The new Netflix documentary American Symphony follows 35-year-old Jaouad and 37-year-old Batiste as she prepares to be admitted to the hospital in 2022 after a cancer recurrence.
As Batiste was getting ready to premiere his original symphony, the American Symphony, at Carnegie Hall in New York City in September of that year, the cancer returned. Have a look at the below tweet related to the story of American Symphony:

In a scene from the movie, Batiste and Jaouad who got married in February 2022 can be seen strolling through a hospital while she receives chemotherapy. Simon Says, they pass the time by mimicking each other’s movements. The Grammy winner can be heard saying in a voiceover:
“I feel a strong, strong, strong desire to take the pain away. But I can’t, This is a moment, a test, and it’s nobody’s fault, and nobody can control it.”
After he received 11 Grammy nominations in November 2021, American Symphony met with Batiste for his album We Are and as he embarked on composing his symphony for a performance at Carnegie Hall.
Matthew Heineman, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2016 for his work on the 2015 film Cartel Land, directed the documentary. American Symphony was initially intended to serve as a record of Batiste’s symphonic work.
However, in December 2021, Jaouad received a second leukemia diagnosis, which she disclosed in her newsletter at the time. Heineman tells how the movie changed during production:
“We initially planned to make a process film about Jon’s American Symphony but life intervened when Jon got nominated for eleven Grammys and Suleika got re-diagnosed with cancer, American Symphony became a beautiful meditation on what it means to be an artist and to persevere during tough times and good times.”
The filmmaker adds of Batiste and Jaouad:
“I’ve truly never met people who know themselves so well, And despite all of the points at which they could deviate from being who they are, they both stay radically, inescapably authentic. That was a beautiful thing to capture and it’s something I hope people take away. As Jon would say, ‘Be yourself.’ “
