Harald Hasselbach Early Life and Education
Hasselbach was born in Amsterdam on September 22, 1967, to a Dutch dad and a mom from Suriname. His family moved a lot because his dad was an agricultural engineer. He lived in the Netherlands, Indonesia, Kenya, and Canada while growing up. His older brother, Ernst-Paul (1965–2008), was on TV.
Hasselbach went to South Delta Secondary School in Delta, Metro Vancouver. He and his son Terran, who later played college football in Colorado, had a really bad car crash when Terran was in high school.
How Did Harald Hasselbach Become Successful?
After spending five years playing college football for Washington and serving as a backup for Dennis Brown and Steve Emtman, he only got on the field for four plays, including a tackle of Emmitt Smith.
He convinced the Philadelphia Eagles not to draft him in the 1990 NFL draft because he had already committed to playing in Calgary. He played four seasons in the CFL, with two of them as an all-star. In Calgary, his talent was developed by defensive line coach Tom Higgins, leading to a 14-team bidding war for him.
Denver eventually secured him for seven seasons from 1994 to 2000. During this time, he achieved 154 tackles, started in 29 regular-season games, and played in Super Bowl XXXIII. His NFL career includes 17.5 quarterback sacks and four forced fumbles.
Surprisingly, he didn’t miss a single game, participating in all 121 games, which included nine NFL playoff games. He also started in all three playoff games when Denver won Super Bowl XXXIII, contributing with two tackles against Atlanta. He’s one of at least ten players who have been part of winning teams in both a Grey Cup and a Super Bowl.
In 2016, he was honored with induction into the British Columbia Football Hall of Fame. At the time of his death, he was working as a defensive line coach at Regis Jesuit High School.
