On March 19, 1976, Chauvin was born in Oakdale, Minnesota. His father worked as a certified public accountant, while his mother was a stay-at-home mom. Chauvin was raised in West Saint Paul during his formative years. His parents got divorced when he was seven years old and they were given joint custody of him.

Chauvin went to Park High School in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, but he dropped out. In 1994, he received his GED. After graduating from Dakota County Technical College with a degree in quantity food preparation, he worked as a prep cook at a McDonald’s in Cottage Grove and thereafter at a Tincunni’s buffet restaurant in nearby Newport.

Between 1996 and 2000, he was a member of the United States Army Reserve serving in the military police twice at Hohenfels, Bavaria, Germany and Rochester, Minnesota, respectively. He also studied from 1995 to 1999 at Inver Hills Community College at that period and subsequently went on to Metropolitan State University, where he earned his law enforcement bachelor’s degree in 2006.

In September 2000, Chauvin submitted an application to the Minneapolis Police Department and in 2001, he was accepted. He participated in three police shootings while he was a member of the force, one of which ended fatally.

From 2001 until 2020, Chauvin worked for the Minneapolis Police Department. Throughout his tenure, Chauvin was linked to three police shootings, one of which resulted in a fatality and had eighteen complaints against him officially documented.

He was chastised in two letters for his misbehavior. On May 25, 2020, during an arrest with three other police, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for approximately nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on the street, yelling, “I can’t breathe.”

On May 26, Chauvin was fired from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and on May 29, he was taken into custody. Protests in Minneapolis-Saint Paul and throughout the United States were sparked by the murder and they eventually extended to other countries.

In 2008, he was given medal for domestic violence after breaking down a door and shooting Ira Latrell Toles, who was supposedly reaching for his weapon. In 2008, after he and his partner tackled a fugitive suspect brandishing a pistol, he was awarded a commendation medal.

Chauvin was awarded another commendation medal in 2009, this time for his off-duty efforts as a nightclub security guard.
