On November 21, 2023, Victor Chang, a Chinese-Australian doctor is being honored by Google on his 87th birthday for his revolutionary contributions to modern heart transplant technology.

Chang was recognized by Google Doodle featuring the talented heart surgeon and an animated heart rate in the background. Chang is recognized as a pioneer in heart transplantation and surgery.

Who are the Family Members of Dr. Victor?

Chang was born in Shanghai in 1936 to Chinese-British parents who had immigrated from Australia. He was raised in Hong Kong, going to Kowloon Tong Primary School and St. Paul’s College for two years. Chang’s mother passed away from breast cancer on April 7, 1948, when she was 33 years old.

This made Chang think about becoming a doctor when he was 12 years old. In 1951, Chang’s father Aubrey sent him and his younger sister to stay with relatives in Sydney. Anthony, a brother and Frances, a sister were Chang’s two younger siblings.

He was a student at Belmore Boys’ High School. In Lewisham, he graduated from Christian Brothers’ High School with a secondary education. He completed his post-secondary studies at the University of Sydney, where he earned a 1962 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree as well as a Bachelor of Medical Science with First-Class Honours.

Where Work Did Dr. Victor Do Before Death?

He worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital after completing his medical studies at the University of Sydney. He then trained as a surgeon in the UK and the US before coming back to Australia. He played a key role in founding the nation’s premier heart and lung transplant center, the National Cardiac Transplant Unit, at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Chang led the creation of the prosthetic heart valve and his team performed heart transplants with a high success rate. His service to international relations between Australia and China and to medical science earned him the title of Companion of the Order of Australia in 1986.

Two young guys killed Chang in 1991 after an unsuccessful extortion attempt. Among his accomplishments is the founding of the Dr. Victor Chang Foundation. In addition, the Dr. Victor Chang Lowy Packer Building at St. Vincent’s Hospital and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute were founded following his passing.
