She began studying dance in 1945 with Sonia Gaskell in Amsterdam and with Marie Rambert in London starting in 1948. She started off as a chorus girl in West End musical theater shows before making a few cameos in a few movies.
She became well-known when she co-starred with Gregory Peck in the romantic comedy Roman Holiday. For that role, she won the first-ever Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for an actress. For her role in Ondine, she was also awarded a Tony Award that year for Best Lead Actress in a Play.
Hepburn went on to star in several popular movies including the romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the drama The Nun’s Story, the musical Funny Face in which she sang her own parts; the thriller-romance Charade in which she starred opposite Cary Grant; and the musical Sabrina.
Her role in the suspense film Wait Until Dark earned her nominations for the Academy Award, the Golden Globe and the BAFTA in 1967. She hardly made any further movie appearances after that, with the exception of Robin and Marian starring Sean Connery.

Born in Auschitz, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, on November 21, 1889, Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston, Hepburn’s father was a British subject until his death on October 16, 1980.
An aristocratic family raised Hepburn in Ixelles, Brussels and she also lived some of her early years in Belgium, England and the Netherlands. From 1936 until 1939, she went to boarding school in Kent, England.
After the Second World War broke out, she went back to the Netherlands. She studied ballet at the Arnhem Conservatory during the war and by 1944, she was staging dance performances to generate funds for the Dutch resistance.
