Oscar Pistorius is a South African Olympic sprinter. Notable for being a double amputee from the knee down, Pistorius competed in the Paralympics in 2004, 2008, and 2012, where he took home six gold, one silver, and one bronze medal.
Amidst some controversy, Oscar became the first amputee runner to represent his country in the 2012 Olympics. Pistorius was granted the privilege of carrying the South African flag at the closing ceremony after his relay team finished eighth in the 4×400-meter sprint.
Reeva Steenkamp was Oscar’s girlfriend when he shot her in 2013, saying he thought she was an intruder. His term for culpable homicide was five years at first, but in 2016, it was increased to six years for murder. His sentence was reduced to 15 years in November 2017 despite having previously spent less time.
This article delves into Pistorius’ financial standing, exploring his net worth, the impact of his legal battles, and his career earnings.
How Much is Oscar Pistorius Net Worth?
As of 2023, Oscar Pistorius’s net worth is estimated to be around $150,000. Oscar received $2 million annually in sponsorship arrangements with Oakley, BT, and Nike, among other companies. Nike and Oakley dropped Pistorius a week after Reeva Steenkamp was killed, and Nike removed the Oscar advertisement with the words “I am the bullet in the chamber.”
Oscar Pistorius Career
Pistorius participated in T44, the classification for single below-knee amputees, despite being categorized as a T43 (double below-knee amputee). He was third in the T44 100-meter race and won the 200-meter event at the 2004 Summer Paralympics, setting a world mark in 21.97 seconds.
Oscar placed sixth in the non-disabled South African Championships’ over the 400-meter event in 2005 and took home gold in the 100- and 200-meter events during the Paralympic World Cup.
Following that, he broke world records in disability sports in the 2007 South African Senior Athletics Championships and Nedbank Championships for the Physically Disabled. He also won gold medals in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter races at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships.
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) declared that Pistorius’ prostheses were not permitted to be used in competitions held under their rules in November 2007 after biomechanics professor Dr. Peter Brüggemann tested Oscar and found that he had “considerable advantages over athletes without prosthetic limbs” who were also tested.
Oscar was granted permission to challenge the IAAF’s ruling in an effort to earn a spot at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Although he was unable to participate in the Summer Olympics that year, he did manage to win gold in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter races.
Pistorius won the 100- and 400-meter events at the BT Paralympic World Cup in early 2011, in addition to three IPC Athletics World titles while racing in New Zealand.
He qualified for the Olympic Games and the World Championships with an “A” level qualification mark at the 19th Internazionale di Atletica Sports Solidarity Meeting. After winning the 400-meter event, he was rated 15th in the world in terms of speed.
Oscar participated in the South African team at the World Championships in August 2011. However, he did not advance to the finals, and he was able to win a silver medal because his team placed second in the 4 x 400 relay, and he had run in the heats.
This achievement made Oscar the first amputee to win a world track medal in a competition that was open to everyone. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Pistorius participated in the 400-meter and 4 × 400-meter relay events, making history as the first amputee runner to compete at the Olympics.
He carried the South African flag during both the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Paralympics and Olympics. In the Paralympics, he broke the Paralympic record by winning a gold medal in the 400-meter event and a silver medal in the 200-meter event. He also won a gold medal for the South African team in the 4 × 100-meter relay.

Why Was Oscar Pistorius Arrested?
Oscar’s life tragically changed on February 14, 2013, when he shot Reeva Steenkamp, a model from South Africa, his girlfriend. In the Pretoria bathroom of his home, Reeva was shot. Pistorius asserted that he mistakenly shot Reeva because he believed she was an intruder.
In October 2014, he was convicted guilty of culpable homicide and given a five-year jail sentence with a three-year concurrent suspended sentence for reckless endangerment. After serving just one-sixth of his imprisonment, Oscar was first freed in October 2015.
Prosecutors filed an appeal of his prior decision in an odd turn of events. Ultimately, a judge judged him guilty of murder and reversed his conviction for culpable homicide. He was sentenced to six years in prison.
After Oscar’s appeal was turned down, his sentence was extended to 13 years and five months in November 2017 and later to 15 years, with less time already served. In 2023, he will be eligible for parole for the first time.
