What Was Found in Paul Murdaugh’s Autopsy Report?
In the dog kennels on the family’s estate, Paul Murdaugh and his mother Maggie were shot on June 7, 2021, and later passed away. Tim Palmbach, a blood spatter specialist and Jonathan Eisenstat, a forensic pathologist were among the 14 witnesses called by the defense on February 27, 2023.
Both witnesses provide graphic details about Paul and Maggie Murdaugh’s autopsies. In his testimony, Eisenstat stated that he came to the conclusion during his investigations that Paul Murdaugh had been shot in the head while the gun was being held against his head. You can see the autopsy photos provided below:
During the testimony which included graphic pictures of the victims’ autopsies and corpses, Alex Murdaugh could be heard wiping his eyes and sniffling. Eisenstat reports that Paul Murdaugh looks to have been shot with the rifle pointing downhill and at a high elevation.
The shooter might have been taller than Murdaugh, though Eisenstat did not make this claim as fact. Given the close proximity of the shooting, the gunman would have been covered in bodily fluids and bullet fragments. According to Palmbach’s testimony, there appear to be two shooters.
Crime Scene Analyst Tim Palmbach says he believes two shooters likely killed Paul and Maggie Murdaugh.

What Did Judge Say About Autopsy Photos?
A photo from Paul and Maggie Murdaugh’s autopsy went viral on social media, shocking a number of people. The judge presiding over Alex Murdaugh’s murder trial, according to Clifton Newman, stated that the image was released from inside the courtroom. The judge said:
“There’s a complaint now regarding the posting of autopsy photos that came from within the courtroom. Based on the direction of the photographs, it did not come from the audience it came from within the well of the court.”
The judge said that the court frequently seals such images to protect the parties’ privacy rights. He said:
“Of course one of the reasons that we’ve sought to seal graphic photos is because the parties have the right to privacy and a right to those matters not being publicly disclosed.”
He also made comparisons to Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa Bryant. Vanessa has filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles for releasing images of the helicopter crash scene in which her husband and daughter perished. The judge said:
“If anyone has heard about the recent settlement that Kobe Bryant’s wife just made with the Los Angeles County and others out there over certain disclosures involving the death of Kobe Bryant, liability can be substantial and it’s a risk for the most part, that’s not worth taking.”
