When her father was unable to locate a girls’ league for her age group, she began playing basketball at the age of five and participated in boys’ recreational leagues. Before concentrating on basketball, Clark also played softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis and golf as a child.
She started playing in girls’ leagues at the age of 13, several years ahead of her age group. Clark began playing basketball for All Iowa Attack, an Ames, Iowa-based Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team in the sixth grade. She continued to play for them until she completed her high school education.
Her AAU teammates included future Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) player Ashley Joens and she was coached by Dickson Jensen of Attack.
Clark drew inspiration from Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx, the closest WNBA team to her hometown and a half hours with her father to attend their games. She was a big fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels after Harrison Barnes, an All Iowa Attack alum, joined the team.
Which Awards Did Caitlin Clark Won in Her Life?
She went to Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, where she was ranked as the fourth player in her class by ESPN and named a McDonald’s All-American in 2020.
Clark shared national freshman of the year, led the NCAA Division I in scoring and was an All-American during her first season with Iowa in 2020–21. She was named a unanimous first-team All-American in her sophomore year and made Division I history by being the first female player to lead the league in both assists and points in a single season.
During her junior year, Clark won every major national Player of the Year award and guided Iowa to its first-ever national championship game. She set Big Ten single-season records for points and assists and she led Division I in assists.
As the best Division I player at her position, Clark has won the Nancy Lieberman Award twice and the Dawn Staley Award three times. She is also Iowa’s all-time leading scorer. She has three gold medals with the United States at the youth international level, two of which came from the FIBA Under-19 Women’s World Cup, where she was named Most Valuable Player in 2021.
