A Look at John Madden’s Impactful Years
John Earl Madden, the son of Earl Russell Madden (1905–1961) and Mary Madden (1917–2011) was born on April 10, 1936, in Austin, Minnesota. When John was a small boy, his father, an auto technician relocated the Madden family to Daly City, California which lies south of San Francisco.
John went to a Catholic parochial school at Our Lady of Perpetual Help with John Robinson graduating in 1950. He then went to Jefferson High School, where he graduated in 1954. From 1969 to 1978, he was the Oakland Raiders’ head coach.
During that time, the team made eight trips to the postseason won seven division titles, appeared in seven AFL/AFC Championship Games and won its first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XI. Madden has the greatest winning % among all coaches, having never had a losing season.
