How Did Jayne Mansfield’s Die?
In the early morning hours of June 29, 1967, Mansfield left Biloxi, Mississippi, driving toward New Orleans. The actress had appeared at a nightclub in Biloxi and she had to get to New Orleans for the next day’s TV appearance.
On the long drive, Mansfield sat in front with a driver, Ronald B. Harrison and her boyfriend, Samuel S. Brody. Three of her children slept in the backseat. The 1966 Buick Electra crashed into the back of a trailer truck just after 2 a.m because Harrison likely didn’t see the truck until it was too late because of a nearby machine pumping out thick fog to kill mosquitos.
The three grown-ups in the front seat died right away. The kids who were sleeping in the back seat made it out alive with only minor injuries. There are false reports that Mansfield’s head was cut off, but she did suffer serious head injuries.
Mansfield’s death record says that she died of a crushed skull with the avulsion of the cranium and brain which rules this out. There is still no clear answer about what the head-like shape was.
It could have been a wig that Mansfield was wearing or carrying, the top part of her real hair and neck or something else entirely. After she died, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that all tractor-trailers should have an underride guard, which is a strong bar made of steel tubes.
The trucking industry was slow to accept this change, though. This type of guard is sometimes called a “Mansfield bar” or an “ICC bumper” in the United States.

Where Was Jayne Mansfield’s Dead Body Buried?
Mansfield was buried in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania on July 3. Charles Montgomery, who is the leader of the Zion Methodist Church led the service. The room at the Pullis Funeral Home was the site of a private funeral service. Her funeral was led by a Methodist preacher.
Mickey Hargitay was the only ex-husband who showed up to the funeral. Mansfield was buried next to her father Herbert Palmer in Fairview Cemetery, which is southeast of Pen Argyl.
