A Look at Jaguar Wright’s Journey With The Roots
Wright was brought to the attention of the hip-hop group “The Roots” in 1998 and led to her going on tour with them. Later, she was a backup singer for Jay-Z on MTV Unplugged in 2001 and was in a Coca-Cola ad as part of the “Nu Soul” campaign for the brand.
That being said, she has put out two records by herself so far: Denials Delusions and Decisions in 2002 and Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul in 2005. Wright also made an album called…And Your Point Is? It was set to come out in 2003 on MCA Records, the same company that put out Wright’s first album, but the label went out of business.
A lot of the songs that were made for that album were later put on Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul, which came out in July 2005 and peaked at number 62 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Wright has been on tour every year since her first record came out.
She went on the “Philly Sounds” tour with Bahamadia and Hezekiah to Europe in March 2008. Wright didn’t play any new songs on the tour, but he did cover versions of “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)” by Crystal Waters and “Saturday Love” by Cherrelle.
A lead song called “Beautiful” came out in the fall of 2009. Wright put out a 5-song EP called “Lost” on Bandcamp in 2019. Wright made headlines on social media in 2020 for things like the direction of her music career, her fights with Roots members and her complaints about artists like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Mary J. Blige.
She also made a claim that Common, who was her boyfriend at the time, s*xually assaulted her after a concert in the mid-2000s. Wright was in the news again in 2022 when she talked about the bad parts of the Hip-Hop music business.
