The Remarkable Journey of Peter Seidler

Seidler was the grandson of Walter O’Malley who stunned the baseball world in the late 1950s when he moved the Dodgers to Los Angeles from Brooklyn. Seidler was the nephew of Peter O’Malley took over the Dodgers after his father died and led the team to two World Series wins in 1981 and 1988.

Peter Seidler was born in Alhambra, California, on November 7, 1960. His parents were Terry Seidler and Roland Seidler Jr. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity at the University of Virginia and got his bachelor’s degree in business.

Seidler also earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles. Seidler built a private equity investment company called Seidler Equity Partners with another person in 1992. Before that, he worked in Bank of America’s lending division.

According to the Padres, his investment company took care of more than $5 billion in assets and made him a lot of money. In 2012, Seidler got his start in sports when he put together a group of investors to buy the Padres from John Moores.

Seidler spent more freely with the Padres when he was chairman. Before the 2021 season, he bought relievers Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, and Joe Musgrove. The Padres made the playoffs in 2022 and went all the way to the National League Championship Series, where they lost to the Phillies.

By the beginning of the 2023 season, the Padres had one of the biggest payrolls in Major League Baseball. Some people including the commissioner were wondering if the team could afford to spend so much.
