The good news is that the tour with the Eagles and Steely Dan will continue beginning in Atlanta on November 2. They’ll be performing together again in 2023, and then again in January of 2024 in Los Angeles. It’s unclear whether Steely Dan will continue as the Eagles’ opening act or if the band will instead hire a different act. The Eagles have speculated that their farewell tour could last as long as 2025.

How Did Don Fagen and Walter Becker Form Steely Dan in 1970?

Don Fagen and Walter Becker, his musical partner, formed Steely Dan in 1970. After answering an ad for a bassist and keyboard player with jazz experience, they formed the band. A steam-powered gadget described in a novel by William S. Burroughs served as inspiration for the band’s moniker.

The original members of Steely Dan met in Los Angeles in 1971, where Fagen and Becker had relocated to pursue careers as composers. They created all the tracks, with Becker playing bass and eventually lead guitar, and Fagen handling keyboards and vocals. After a few albums and band changes, Fagen and Becker reduced Steely Dan to primarily a studio endeavour. “Aja” was their most successful album in 1977, followed by “Gaucho” in 1980.

The release of Fagen’s 1982 solo album “The Nightfly” is widely regarded as a high point of his impressive solo career. More solo albums followed, with “Morph the Cat” being recognized with a Grammy for Best Surround Sound Album. Although Fagen pondered abandoning the Steely Dan moniker after Walter Becker’s death in 2017, the band still performs under that moniker on tour.
